to life, the universe, and everything (including: what is my age this year).
In these 42 years, I’ve lived in 7 countries for long enough to feel part of them, and in 7 states for long enough to make lifelong friends in each. In one place, we lived in a city of tens of millions that never slept, in another we lived 45 minutes from the nearest postal service, in another we were hundreds of miles from a hospital, in another the police were the enemy and the criminals friends, and in another we put a gate in our back fence to connect to our neighbor’s yard. My wife and I have four children ranging from 21 to 0 years old, and pay five tuitions in four countries. We have held the hand of siblings, children, and dear friends as they’ve fought cancer – some returning to today, more departing to the eternal. I’ve remained in closed countries when the state department told all citizens to flee, I’ve endured the idiocy of democracy, and experienced the cruelty of communism. I’ve ran, biked, kicked, climbed, flipped, slid, dove, surfed, and vaulted more than my fair share, some for 10k hours. In the process, I’ve broken bones, dislocated joints, been knocked unconscious, received many scars, and have loved every minute of it. I’ve tried to live for extended periods of time without plastic, without power, without sugar, and without carbohydrates, but was unsuccessful with cutting out the plastic. I learned to write software in BASIC on a ‘286, found my love language in C, modeled the earth’s magnetosphere in Fortran, created embedded systems of all flavors, and developed real time data-driven web technologies. I’ve started seven companies, two internationally, and have learned business the hard, and beautiful, way.
I say all this just to give some color on this blog site – I’m looking forward to unpack some of these topics. As I go, I’d like to keep the topics to a few categories, and to follow threads that have been significant and that I’m continuing to invest in today. We shall see :-)!
